Chinese restaurants in the United States range from steam-table lunch counters to white-tablecloth Cantonese seafood halls, and most fall somewhere in between: a laminated menu, a lunch special board, and combo plates priced a few dollars below the dinner menu. Ordering by number off the menu is normal and speeds things up, especially at takeout counters. Family-style ordering, where a table shares several dishes with rice rather than each person getting an individual entree, is standard at sit-down spots and usually cheaper per person. Many neighborhood restaurants are cash-preferred or charge a small card fee, so it is worth asking or checking the door before you order. Delivery apps cover most areas, but calling the restaurant directly is often faster and avoids the markup.
Hours are published for 6 days a week. The most common schedule is 11 amโ2:30 pm. It is closed on Monday. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. The listed phone number is (650) 485-2221. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone. Its website is chefzhaokitchen.com, where you may find menus, price lists or booking options.

Overall very solid Shanghainese food. The Dongpo pork was a standout, but most everything was good. Service was not the best, but understandable as they were quite busy on a Friday night and we were a large table that arrived way late for our reservation. The food came out super fast though, which we very much appreciated.

The food here is good, the pan fried buns aren't to die for in my opinion. They were just alright. But the Tofu with Crab meat was good, the fish with a sweet sauce was good and the prawn fried rice was good and had that charred taste I was looking for. Chinese Donuts were good, not the best and it's not sweet at all like some places. I actually prefer that they aren't sweet. Would go perfectly with some noodle soup, any of my Khmer folks out there would know. Overall my experience here was good, service was alright too; not very friendly people but they weren't rude either. Just don't go in expecting the same kind of friendliness you'd get at Chic-Fil-A or In N Out. The restaurant itself is pretty small, so the seating area is kinda tight. It's kinda like a game of Tetris when it's busy and with me being a bigger guy I had to squeeze my way in. I would recommend trying this place out and I will be back to try the other dishes whenever I'm in the area. Plenty of parking space when I went on Saturday, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem to find a spot.

My hubby and I were there on December 25, 2025. The food was delicious, affordable, and had huge portions. The only thing that was salty. But if you're okay with the saltiness, which I guess most Chinese food has, then it's fine. Reservations are required, so you don't need to wait that long, since space is limited. Our server was good and explained the food when asked, but he was rushing and there was no up-selling. Probably, they did not have to because of their popularity. Food came out fast and was super hot; presentation was good too. The restaurant was packed, and we were seated at a small table that hardly fit all the plates. My favorite was the busser; he was focused and quite friendly. I will be back and recommend. This is a casual dining place and not for an intimate atmosphere...

A great visit to Chef Zhao Kitchen. !he service was very goo, friendly, attentive, and impressively fast getting dishes to the table. The dining room felt clean, bright, and comfortable, and thereโs plenty of parking in the lot, which is always a plus in Palo Alto. In the back thereโs also a small counter area that appears to sell specialty items and frozen dumplings; I didnโt explore it much, but it looked interesting for a future visit. The food was delicious across the board. The steamed XLB were delicate and rich, each one filled with hot, savory broth that made them hard to eat slowly. The pan-fried XLB added a crisp golden bottom to that same juicy filling; the best of both worlds. The garlic-sautรฉed green beans were bright, fragrant, and just oily enough to feel indulgent. The braised beef noodle soup was deep and comforting, with tender beef and a broth that tasted like it had been simmering all day. Perhaps one piece of meat was a bit on the lean side. And the combination fried rice was hearty and satisfying, packed with flavor and just the right texture to keep you going back for another bite.

We didnt have to wait long to be seated. A waiter brought out tea immediately to our table. Order was taken pretty fast too. The food came out quickly. It was hot and delicious. The restaurant space feels a bit tight in between each table and chairs but still functional so its fine. Parking was easy to find. We went during dinner time on a weekday.
